Overview of role

Location: Biggleswade

Shift Pattern: 12 hour Day shift, working Monday to Sunday (42 hours average per week)

We’re looking for a Control System Engineer to join our friendly and ambitious team. As part of the ABF group, we have big plans for the next five years, you’ll play a key role in shaping our future. The role is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to improve, maintain and rectify the electrical/electronic control systems within a food manufacturing site.

 

The Control System Engineer working pattern would require full flexibility across the week as it is worked on a 4 on 4 of rotation. For example, one week you would work Monday to Thursday, then the following week would be Tuesday to Friday. This will be day shift only, working 6am-6pm.

Key Accountabilities

Our Site Reliability Engineer is looking for a team member to... 

 

  • Lead boldly — Responding confidently to equipment breakdowns, diagnosing faults and implementing effective repairs and leading continuous improvements, project work and upgrades on Control Systems structure and network.
  • Stay curious — Developing a sound and thorough understanding of equipment, plant, and processes and working alongside experienced control system engineers to observe, learn, and build core control system skills.
  • Do the right thing together — Working safely at all times by applying sound engineering principles, safe systems of work, isolations, permits to work, and risk assessments and taking responsibility for your own safety and the safety of others by reporting unsafe conditions and repairing hazards under supervision.
  • Make it happen — Promptly and thoroughly completing all tasks and capturing correct follow on actions, maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, inspections, planned work and repairs, and completing maintenance activities to ensure equipment and assets are available when required

 

You will also: 

  • Design, develop, and maintain control systems for industrial processes
  • Produce control philosophies, functional design specifications, and I/O schedules
  • Develop PLC and HMI software
  • Configure and integrate instrumentation, drives, and safety systems
  • Diagnose and resolve control system faults and performance issues
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, safety, and quality requirements
  • Collaborate with operations, quality and engineering teams

And you have the following skills and experiences.... 

  • Minimum Level 3 Equivalent Apprenticeship in an electrical discipline.
  • Extensive experience in electrical troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Expertise in electrical systems, components, and equipment, including knowledge of relevant codes and regulations.
  • Able to work autonomously on their own and within a team.
  • A good understanding of PLC, HMI and servo systems, preferably Allen Bradley.
  • Working and use of AUTOCAD or a similar design software package.
  • Support the design, modification, and testing of PLC‑based control systems for food production and packaging lines
  • Understanding of industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet)
  • Help maintain and improve existing automation systems to support production uptime and efficiency
  • Work closely with production, engineering, and quality teams to resolve control-related issues
  • Ensure control systems comply with food safety, hygiene, and site standards
